Gin is a spirit drink obtained by flavoring ethyl alcohol with mainly juniper berries1, like juniper. The elaboration of gin begins with the alcoholic fermentation of a malt (barley, rye, corn …). It is quite close to its ancestor the juniper which is a traditional drink in all the old Netherlands (Netherlands and part of present-day Belgium).

The production of gin began in the Spanish Netherlands at the end of the 17th century and then went international. The flavor of ordinary gin is that of a very dry alcohol, which makes it rarely drunk pure. It is found especially in the composition of many cocktails when it is not already marketed in a flavored version. In the past, the gin used on Royal Navy warships titrated at almost 50 °, which made it possible to preserve the explosive properties of gunpowder if it was accidentally contacted with the drink (storage in the hold ). This gin can still be found in some distilleries, such as that of Plymouth, under the name “Marine Gin”.
