Saint Luis Rey Cigars
The story of San Luis Rey Cigars
The Cuban cigar brand Saint Luis Rey was founded in 1940 in Havana by the company Zamora y Guerra. His factory is established at 180 Calle Maximo Gómez in Havana. There are two theories regarding the choice of brand name. For some, it is inspired by the book “Le Pont du roi Saint-Louis” by Thornton Niven Wilder. Others say it is a tribute to the city of San Luis near the tobacco-producing region of Vuelta Abajo. This second hypothesis is much more plausible. The Saint Luis Reyes should not be confused with the San Luis Reyes. The latter were cigarillos machine-made in Germany by the company Villiger Söhne.
Exclusivity of the sale
Originally, Saint Luis Rey cigars were intended to be sold exclusively on the British Habanos market through the import company N.R. Silverstone Cigar Limited owned by Michael de Keyser and Nathan Silverstone. This importer had a monopoly on the distribution of Saint Luis Rey cigars in the United Kingdom for decades. The Cuban revolution which broke out in 1953 neither modified nor canceled this exclusivity contract, which was renewed in 1960. From 1993, Cubatabaco, a Cuban state enterprise in charge of managing the Cuban cigar, decided to no longer limit the marketing of Saint Luis Rey cigars in the United Kingdom. The brand’s creations are sold all over the world. In addition, Cubatabacco entrusts the distribution of Habanos on the British market to Hunters and Frankaula. Saint Luis Rey was not included in the catalog of the new importer until 2003. At present, Habanos Saint Luis Rey are sold worldwide. These cigars are, however, quite difficult to find.
Confection and specificities
Saint Luis Rey cigars have an excellent reputation among Habanos lovers because of their taste. Vitolas carry with them a rich range of rich aromas, dominated by spicy and earthy notes. The tobacco leaves come from Vuelta Abajo and Semi Vuelta. All cigars are long-tripe and are handcrafted in the Romeo y Julieta factory. Each cape has either a maduro dress (dark brown) or a maduro shade (extremely dark brown). It is smooth and slightly shiny. The strength of the Habanos Saint Luis Rey is located at the medium-high degree. The premium cigars of this brand are much more accessible to experienced smokers. Famous admirers of Saint Luis Rey include singer Franck Sinatra and actor James Coburn. It is recommended to slowly smoke these puros, in particular its stout vitolas Saint Luis Rey Regios (robusto module – caliber 48), Saint Luis Rey Double Corona (caliber 49) as well as Saint Luis Rey Serie A (corona gorda module – caliber 46).
